Rathfarnham Wood
Expanding for a Growing Family
Located in Rathfarnham Wood, the terraced home is one unit of a set of terraced residences built on either side of a cul-de-sac.
Many of the neighboring homes had previously modified their porches or added rear extensions, as is common in these types of terraces. Inspired by this trend, the clients sought to expand their home by enlarging the kitchen and dining area and creating an additional room in the attic, complete with a master ensuite.
The rear extension transforms the kitchen and dining area into a bright, open space. Natural light is provided via a large singular opening to the rear and a strategically placed rooflight above the counter and island. This setup creates a well-lit environment ideal for a kitchen. The counter wraps around to the rear, incorporating a window hatch that serves as a connection to the outdoor space. The newly paved rear garden extends the functionality of the kitchen and dining area, creating a fluid indoor-outdoor relationship.
The former kitchen and dining area has been repurposed into a new living space, featuring built-in shelving designed to display a television, family photos, and cherished belongings. On the opposite wall, full-height storage units provide practical solutions for laundry, coats, and other household items, ensuring the space remains uncluttered and efficient.
In the attic, a new dormer works with the existing roof structure to create a spacious master bedroom with an ensuite.
On the first floor, a reconfiguration allows for the addition of a Jack-and-Jill walk-in wardrobe, conveniently serving two bedrooms.
A later addition to the project was the inclusion of a new porch. This feature creates a welcoming and practical entrance area, complete with seating for removing shoes and larger openings to bring more light into a previously dark hallway.
